Introduction to the Operation of the Spent Grain Dryer

Spent brewer's grain is a primary by-product of the beer brewing process, consisting of the solid residue left after the fermentation and filtration of barley malt and adjuncts. Rich in crude protein, crude fiber, amino acids, and various trace elements, it holds significant value for recovery and reuse. Fresh spent grain has a very high moisture content—often exceeding 80%—and is moist, viscous, and poorly permeable to air; at ambient temperatures, it is highly prone to mold growth and rapid spoilage, making storage and long-distance transport difficult. Direct disposal not only wastes resources but also causes environmental pollution; therefore, drying and dewatering are critical steps for the large-scale, resource-efficient utilization of spent grain.

The industry commonly employs a mature and stable rotary drum drying process. The complete system comprises a pre-treatment unit, a heating system, the main rotary dryer, an induced-draft dust removal system, and an intelligent control system. This setup enables automated, continuous, large-scale industrial production, ensuring stable dewatering while maximizing the retention of the grain's original nutritional content.

Fresh, wet spent grain is highly viscous and prone to clumping; direct drying often results in uneven heating, material sticking to equipment walls, incomplete drying, and excessive energy consumption. To address this, our system incorporates mechanical pre-treatment—using screw presses or belt dewatering equipment—to reduce the moisture content from over 80% to approximately 65%. This process breaks up clumps and optimizes the material's physical state, effectively reducing the load on the downstream drying equipment, boosting production efficiency, and saving energy. After drying, the moisture content is reduced to around 12%—meeting safe storage standards—resulting in a product that is loose in texture, uniform in color, and free from clumps or mold, thereby resolving the issues associated with the perishability and difficult storage or transport of fresh spent grain.
